The Wright Consultancy were contracted in by Duggan Systems Limited who had won the contract to install the building envelope.

The Brief
  • Calculate U-values for the: metal rainscreen, punch-hole windows, circle slide door system and all curtain wall elements.

  • Calculate a comprehensive condensation risk assessment.

  • Calculate complex 3D bracket Chi value.

  • Work closely with the façade contractor to establish the best possible build up to hit the target U-value within architectural constrains.

Key Challenges
  • This striking building raised some complications when it came to calculating the whole envelope area weighted U-value. 

    • The façade has varying relief points and cladding types, all these needed calculating and integrating into the over-all value.

    • The interfaces between the façade types generated unique details which produced interesting Psi-values and condensation risks.

    • The articulation and complexity of the ground floor screens was particularly challenging.

  • The pre-determined architectural limits meant we had to find solutions to enable target U-values to be hit. These limitations included rainscreen depth, bracket type and density.

Our Approach

We assessed the whole building to identify typical or worst-case details to analyse for condensation risk.

We calculated the U-values of the various cladding types and the curtain wall elements. In consultation with our client we were able to agree the best build-up to hit the cladding U-value within the constraints set by the architect.

We then had to calculate the Psi-values generated at the interface of cladding types, at the punch hole windows and other points through out the building.

The Boon Edam circle slide door was then assessed and the U-value added to the rest.

Finally the whole lot was put together into the final report with textual and graphic output to clearly explain our methodology and results.

Results

Because we received very pertinent and detailed files early on and had good communications with the client, we were able to process this project very quickly. Supplying the report about one month after receiving the instruction to proceed. 

As part of our usual customer service we were, through modelling and consultation with DSL, able to optimise the insulation install on the metal rainscreen and achieve project U-value targets.
